BMW has trademarked the iM3 model name, which is surely the name to be used for the future quad-motor M3 EV. The trademark has been registered at:

I sincerely hope they can capture the driving characteristics of the ICE M series cars and carry them over to an EV version. With one EV in the fleet I’m rooting for BMW here, but they need to knock it out of the park.

Only way to capture that is to keep the weight down, and since the i4 is 5000lbs I'm having doubts. It weighs as much as the model S plaid but it's as slow as the model 3. The new ev only platform will make or break the im3. If they can keep the weight down to model 3 numbers then it'll be a winner.

the closest thing we have on this earth to an exciting and involving EV is the Porsche Taycan and they are absolutely tanking in value and folks that bought them are reselling them to purchase back 911s...

really curious to see how this goes

I noted a long and colorful ad during football games for Taycans. When I see lots of ads, I often think sales are down and need a jump start. I could be very wrong, but...

As happy M3 owner, I really hope the “i” is an alternative, not a replacement.

So you’re envisioning BMW offering two different 3 Series platforms simultaneously? One ICE and one EV?

There will be. The G50 chassis for ICE engines, and the i3 cars on NK platform.

Shocking!

Wow, who could have guessed this naming scheme?

And yes, we know there are going to be both ICE and electric 3 series until at least 2030, so I would bet the M3 will be the same. From a business perspective, BMW probably wants as many M3 buyers to jump over to the new electric model, but they know a sizable portion on going to stick to ICE for the near future. Might as well sell it to them.

Why wouldn’t there be? They have two different 5 series platforms simultaneously going on sale right now. And they also have it right now for the 7 series.

The “i” letter should never be allowed anywhere near an M badge.

We don’t need a unbalanced car like a plaid, which doesn’t have the chassis to make use of that 1020 hp (unless we’re talking about drag racing). It’s kind of pathetic that a track pack s plaid is only 2-3 seconds faster than an AMG GT 63S and G80 M3 CS despite having 400+ horsepower and R spec track tires (vs standard cup tires) on a track (Nurburgring). Let’s face it 700-800 hp with a well balanced fairly light chassis is enough to satisfy the non drag racing crowd.

I imagine BMW will most likely offer both a hybrid drive train and a full on EV. That seems to be the trend now (iM, M5)

I’m not worry about its performance or even handling. I’m more worry about the design.

I hope so, maybe if I'm lucky I can get a chance peak of one one day while I'm out walking the dog!

I believe full EVs would say "Electric Test Vehicle" while hybrids would say "Electrified or Hybrid Test Vehicle".

BMWs model designation with an i suffix indicates it's a gas powered fuel injected car. A prefix of i indicates it's an electric model. BTW, the prefix i stands for innovation.
