Weird Steering Wheel Clunk
Hi guys -
When I bought my 2016 340 xDrive the car came with a Bilstein B14 kit (47-264625). I love the ride feel of the kit but recently have developed a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel slightly off center and to the left. I have attached a video of the sound. Anyone have any ideas? Steering rack? Something loose perhaps? https://vimeo.com/863176366

Sounds like steering rack, there is a kit for this.

I did mine today. Not a bad job other than taking off the undertray.
Use g clamp to push the new bush into the housing and something to push it down past the threads so you can get the cap on. I torqued mine to 70nm but the steering wheel wouldn't center. I backed it off maybe 5 degrees and it's perfect. You can get the 3 prong adapters to tighten the cap on Amazon for $10. It sits in a 24mm socket. Test drive it before putting the undertray back on. |

I picked the kit up and will be doing this job soon. I ordered some new underbody panels that were all broken so I'll do everything at once. I'm thinking a quick mark before I unscrew the existing cap will get me close to where the new one needs to be.

It's a very easy and worthwhile job. You will feel an improved steering feel and not realize you used to have a problem. |

Performed this fix but unfortunately still hasn't fixed the knock. Do you think I should try tightening it?

OK I will give that a shot. I marked the position of the original cap when I replaced the bushing, but maybe it was off? I'll try tightening it this weekend and see how she goes.

I did this few months back. I didn't need any tool, just lubricant to push the plunger in place. And I tensioned mine back all the way it went (cap flush with the steering rack) and steering is now as before but no knocking.
I bought the BMW OEM repair kit 32106891974. |
