Why is BMW moving away from offering run-flat tires?

Unlike you, I've had plenty of flats--par for the course when running low profile tires on Chicago's shitty roads. I've never known anyone that switched to conventional non-RFs that has gone back. The decrease in NVH and better handling I think is the reason.

Question and then an opinion:

Does the battery configuration on BMW EV's permit a spare in the trunk?

My 2022 45e runs RFT's on air suspension which appears to mitigate any ride issues for me, and I've been driving cars/trucks for over 50 years. The "add on" battery for the plug-in design sits when the spare tire would be in the trunk.

had them on my m235i a long time ago what shit tires they were back in 2014-2015 then changed the tires and the ride went from horrible/crashy to actually wonderfully nice and actually feeling the road i am driving on. The tires RTF ones back then simply killed the feel in the car. I don't know now a couple of generations later if its the same but back then they were shit.

End of the day I think choice would be nice but I do understand manufacturing and inventory issues so if they had to choose OK. For any car I buy I'm fine with the non-RFT as I prefer better ride and less expensive. On my wife's car I like the idea of RFTs which she had on her X3. Now she is in a Q3 and no RFTs so if she gets a flat tire the first thing she will do is call me even if I'm in Thailand and it's 2 AM there. (sigh)

You do realise you can just go out and buy RFT tires and mount them? There's your choice

Not quite the same as the choice to buy the car with them versus paying for a second set of tires on a new car.

True, but once upon a time those of us who DON'T want RFTs were in a similar situation. Either don't buy the car at all, or put different tires on it right away. I think I binned the factory tires on my E90 before I'd had it a week.

I agree it would be better to have the choice as part of the ordering/purchase process. But if they're going to choose a side, I think fewer people will be upset with non-RFTs being that default.

RFT tires are way more prone to damage. That is the real big issue with them.

I got less than 500 miles on my oem run flats before a bubbled side wall. I swapped the oem runflats for 4s now at 5k miles same roads no issues.

Yep, everyone I know with a BMW with RFTs in this area has the same problem. It's not just Bridgestone too, seen the Pirellis do it.
