Well..just my luck with buying a new car...I thought I learned my lesson last time from buying a subaru and not realizing the 4th gear grinds at high rpms. I thoroughly inspected this 328xi before I bought it...seemed perfect but 2 days later I start it up and its ticking... the weird thing is that it didn't do that when I bought it and was fine yesterday morning, But later in the day when I started it up it was clearly ticking. Later that night when I was coming back from the gym I started it up and there was no tick/clicking anymore. When I started it up this morning the ticking was back...My question being is this the hydraulic lifters? how much will this cost me...I am not under warranty

I agree. That's what mine sounded like when I had lifter noise. Mine was fixed under warranty, so I'm not sure what the cost would be to fix it.

I couldnt read that humongous thread about it but other than the noise does it damage anything?

from what I've been reading on hydraulic lifters is that its more annoying than damaging than anything

That's a relief. That really is loud though man. Hopefully, it goes away as it seems sometimes it does. Your oil at max? Maybe an oil change might make it less noticeable.

The list of fixes.
1)The first thing BMW used to do is run the engine at
higher rpm's to get oil back up into the oil starved area.
2)BMW's other fix was changing hydraulic lifters to a redesigned type. I am not sure but there maybe two versions of the redesigned lifters.
3)BMW's third fix redesigned head unit.
4)Some have reported they got rid of it with different oils or additives
or even a regular oil change.

Interesting info there, i have read about the first point as being one of the reasons, so i guess driving the car hard once a way should be good? its awesome to do that on the NA straight 6 so will this ticking noise from the lifter damage the engine in the long run? is it more of a cosmetic problem then an actual problem that can damage the engine?
@ OP yes in the video your sound is just like the ticking noise from the lifters..

Hard to believe that something that sounds bad
doesn't cause damage or excessive wear.
Especially since its caused from lack of oil.
If the oil has 7500 miles on it I would change it
out as a first step or top it off.
Some have played with different oil viscosity's
or moly or other additives with some reported success.

Honestly, mine has "the tick" and I can care less. It ONLY does it in very cold weather and even then it's only sometimes. Is it cold where you live right now?

The ultimate fix is to replace the head and I did not want that done. The more annoying part is the procedure to even get the head replaced. All dealerships know that's the fix, but they won't do it in the first, second, or even third visit. They'll bleed the system, change the lifters, and then maybe consider it. It's costly and they'll avoid it when they can.

The TSB states there is no engine damage just an unpleasant noise. Mine isn't loud so I don't care, if yours is I'd probably do it too, but really think before you replace the head on your new to you vehicle.

Ironically, when I change my oil is when I hear it the most.

My e46 had "the tick". It annoyed me a little, but didn't harm anything. I traded the car in at 176,000 miles and it was running strong.

That said, I made sure the e91 didn't have it!

Also, it always seemed worse in cold weather.

Ah, the lifter/tappet ticking noise, if it goes away then no problems especially after a long drive. That being said, my ticking sound never went away regardless of how long or hard I drove. I have an engineering background and from my perspective it was not good. A shitty design that lets the oil drain from the lifter when sitting idle. Some say it wont hurt the car, but metal ticking is never good, and some had their heads replaced, some all lifter were replaced, some other parts (cams, arms, etc), and some like me couldn't take it anymore. I sold my 328 while I was still under warranty b/c my dealer wouldn't even follow the recommended TSB. GL!

FYI...changing oil does nothing but replaces your old oil with new.

What I found with the ticking noise is when the car sits for a couple days and I start the car the oil drains to the bottom for some reason it doesn't stay stuck up on the lifters if I drive it for like a mile or two it goes away as long as you keep the RPMs up for a little bit and then it'll I can park it for 2 or 3 days start it up sometimes I'll hear it sometimes I always change my oil at 5,000 miles with 5W30 I have a 2008 328i e92 I also added oil additive for lifter noises it's a yellow bottle rislone engine treatment it definitely worked it would extend the life of the oil being on the top of the motor but I've watched other YouTubers say to add a quart of 5W-40 and the rest 5W30 I tried that I didn't see a difference but the yellow bottle definitely helped a little bit more. I only put one bottle in per oil change I may try two because it says one bottle is for every 5 quarts and the BMW takes 6.9 so maybe I'll try bottle in a half or two I've also heard some people say change your oil to zero w30 I've always been worried about changing my oil viscosity because of all the tiny holes in it I don't want anything clogging it up and ruining the valtronic system if anybody has any info on this let me know thanks
