Octane is. Octane is the amount of pressure, temperature, etc. that it takes to create a combustion without an ignition source, i.e. spark! Methanol has a VERY high octane, which is why people use it to keep detonation from happening and is why it effectively raises the octane of the gas you are currently running. If you have a high octane mixture, it doesn't matter what flashpoint it has because it can stay stable much longer and under more extreme pressures.

Methanol may be more volatile a liquid, but when it comes to using it to cause a combustion it helps because of its ability to withstand pressure and temperature better BEFORE combusting on its own.

I think you are misunderstanding what we are talking about. oddjob, was concerned about safety in using any more methanol than a 50/50 mix I think.
