It was bothersome in the first week, as it was unexpected, but after a while you tend to adapt to it and you naturally work around it, so it becomes quite unnoticeable.

Brake Energy Regeneration may play a role in downshift "surging" - as will the higher compression ratio in a diesel model; in the 20d auto I do tend to feel it - but it is slight and may help save on the brake pads.
