Clutch Cool down Warning?
Hi All,
I had a bizzare warning light and message come up the other day while driving a F30 BMW 316i. Basically the message was that the clutch was too hot and that I needed to allow it to cool down. I've searched high and low all over to see if anyone else has had this message pop up but no lucky. Yes I was driving like a bit of a lunatic. The temp out side was +/- 30C and I was in hectic start/stop traffic. Has anyone had this message pop up before? |

So, let's see: you're driving aggressively in hot weather and stop-and-go traffic, and you get a clutch warning, and you're worried something's wrong. Do you have an automatic, or what?

Wow...I can't keep up with all the replies *Note the sarcasm*
I'll ask again if anyone has had this warning come up, please share your story. If anyone has any information on this type of warning, please share. |

I have a 6 speed manual and haven't had the warning. Are you riding the clutch in your spirited driving ?

Now I don't know how good you are with a manual (erratic clutch movement is begging to kill the clutch prematurely) but this isn't normal at least for normal traffic (maybe if tracking for a long time) I've beaten my clutch with several hard launches and never got a warning like this, so damage to the longevity has most likely occured... Well lets hope you don't see it in the future. It can't be to good for the clutch if it gave a warning |

I also have not heard of a manual clutch heat warning. Interesting.
By the way, even in very heavy, slow traffic or on a hill there is no reason to ride the clutch. Dear Clutch: I feel your pain. |

Trust me when you have our taxi's and other idiotic drivers on the road to contend with, you do have to ride the poor clutch... |

The warning happened because you were burning up the clutch. In most cars you'll just notice that when you boil over the fluid and the pedal goes to the floor, the BMW was polite enough to give you a warning.
The system was working as intended, you need to decide how much clutch slipping you really need to allow or be prepared to replace it after 30,000km.

Then real world data shows it can get that hot. They may need to increase the threshold temperature as where the error comes on. If you don't report this problem BMW will likely never know about it. |
