Now, I would love to see BMW build a car like the Mercedes AMG GT as well, but I don't see that happening. The Z5 is coming of course, but it remains to be seen what they plan for a price-point and performance, especially the M model (S55 or S63?).
The 6er is a descendent of the CS/CSi/CSL series which is a four seat Gran Tourer in the classical sense. Even the E24 continued this philosophy as did the E63 and F12. With the latest 6er answering market trends for a more practical Coupe with the Gran Coupe which to all intents and purposes outsells the Coupe and Cabrio by a huge margin. I do not for see this market change.

The new Z5 is the first of models co-developed and pooled resources vehicle with Toyota. It will be a Roadster first followed later by a Coupe which will mirror how BMW place their X models. With the standard core SAV and sportier SAC models.
With the Roadster being Z5 and coupe being Z6.

If you check BMWs naming strategy. They copyright a multiple of numerical lines, especially in regards to emerging markets where they offer X5s with a letter or name before them. Its about renewing and protecting their intellectual property.

Here is the Toyota Twinster of the new Architecture.
I will eat my hat if the next 6 series can even get near being a Porsche 911 competitor let alone beat it. The i8 can't beat the base model 911 cars and that is closer in class.

In fact I'll buy a hat especially to eat and celebrate if this happens.

Sadly I suspect Audi, Mercedes, Porsche McLaren will have this segment sewn up for another decade with no sign of BMW

Since when was the i8 a rival for the 911?
I don't see it. The closest Porsche it got to in terms of innovation was the 918 Spyder and it costs a fraction of that car.

Price point, style and performance.

I surely can't be the only person who has looked at what 100k will buy?

Oh boy - ready for the hat eating video!

Are you sure you want to make such a prediction ?

Have you taken a look at the field that the M6 plays in? The C7.R has a NA V8 putting out 493ish, the new 911 RSR maybe mid-engined, and the current one is making about the same as the C7.R. Then there is the Ford GT, and the Ferrari 488. It is easier and cheaper to use the M6 and the TTV8, and tone it down, than taking the M3 with the S55 and tune it up---race wise, without the use of "meth injection", like with the GTS.

But the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG GT in the same market as the Porsche 911 has signalled new conflict between the big German premium brands, and now BMW wants the 6 Series to be its contender, as a more agile two-seater sports car. It’s that move which will make room for the new 8 Series.

So basically:
Z5 = Boxster and (potential) Cayman competitor
6 Series = 911 competitor
8 Series = Panamera / S Class coupe competitor

Rots of ruck, BMW. It ain't gonna be easy.
I get the Z comparison and sort of agree 6-series comparison as well. Not sure about 8-series comparison. 6-series GC vs. Panamera and CLS make more sense to me.

So who's going to buy a Mate?

Seriously, I know it fits, but man the amount of wise cracks and name wrangling you can do with that... Wait for the M80, it's sure to be a firecracker...

BMW has plenty of those. The X1, X3, X4, X5 & X6 aren't enough for you?

Sadly, this attitude is the one that has pulled BMW away from what makes it unique and so special among OEMs.
Dont forget about the upcoming X2 and X7

I don't get it. How is the giant 6 series coupe a competitor to the tiny 911?

The "attitude" of going where the money is at?

The profits to be made in a Slade killer will go along way to providing the means to produce the low volume toys.

I think that was called "sarcasm"?!?

In the same way, BMW should/ must not make the Manual transmission available on these new 6 and 8.... Otherwise it is called "back pedalling into last century"...

ΒΜW please prove me wrong but i see this.

Current 6 series coupe remains as a 6 series , while 6 series grand coupe is geting the new name as 8 series

I dont think that BMW would sacrifice even a small fraction of its profit for a new lightweight sport model .

These guys are naming lightweigh technology the downgrade from V8 to straight 6 .

Dont know, just my opinion. Lets see
