just got vandalized..

I got home late at 1am today (Thursday) and got a call from
management office. (I am living in apartment in downtown)

They told me that my car's broken into last night.

I went down to underground garage to check my car, and I found
that passenger side's front window was broken.

Since I haven't left anything valuable in the car, the window
is only the problem for now.

The management office told me that police already checked cars
last night but report it my own just in case.

So my question is, should I report it to police at this moment?
I just checked my insurance policy and found that I have to pay
deductible for $1000 for vandalism.

What should I do in this case?

If police attended the scene then there is a file no. for the vandalism.

You should find out that file no. from the building management as you will probably be asked for it when you contact police -- They may decide to take out a separate file no. for your car.

In either case, the file no. will be required by the insurance company in order to file a claim.

$1000 deductible is quite high... mine currently is $300 for vandalism.

if your deductible is 1000, then id just pay to get it fixed yourself. most likely cost less than 1k

You should report it to the police. If anything, it will help them monitor a possible crime trend in your area. Not to mention, I see business cards laying on the floor beside your vehicle. These may have been handled by the culprit and may have finger prints on them....just a thought.

This isn't covered by anything other than auto insurance? The property management has no liability in this case?

A few years ago I used to live in a condo at Yonge and Dundas and it happen to me twice (within the a year) with my old car. The condo corp paid for the windows because security was negligent and there had been a series of break-ins in the garage previously.

I made a police report and they finger printed my cat. The cop said that chances are that they won't find the person right away but it does help them build a case and find any leads.

I went to Fix Auto on Queen Street East on both occasions. Their prices were reasonable and they sourced a used window and fixed it within a day.

Yes I would just fix it yourself if your deductible is 1K, I would also report it myself if I were in you shoes unless the mgmt office gave your the incident number so you can go in and verify it was reported.

File a report directly with the Police. This will help regardless of which direction you go. Buy a new window and have someone else replace it. (Unless you have done this type of work before)

The police will not care about finger prints or anything else. This is the sad reality of policing today.

Be thankful they broke the glass and not tried to punch out your lock or do other type of damage. If you replace the glass, you are back to good.

I lived in TO for years and know this situation all too well. Had my car broken into in the Apt garage but they punched the lock. They stole $6 in change and did $1400 in damage.

I would gladly pay the high insurance premiums to have an alarm that would just blow the whole car up in this type of situation. One less dirtbag to worry about.

Beg to differ. Maybe in your neck of the woods, but here in Calgary, I can assure you that some investigative measures would be undertaken regardless. And I speak from personal experience.

Call your insurance company and verify the deductible, if its really $1000 ,you are gonna have to pay it out of your pocket

if you are not going to use your insurance to cover the cost, no reason to report to police. You can still report it to help catch these criminals however just looking at the picture getting finger prints out of the car will be pretty difficult.

If the APT has a good security video (which I doubt it)and there's a chance of getting a good footage of the suspect then you should definitely report it , as the police can build up a case on the suspect(s).

Also there's no time limit reporting a crime as long is within a reasonable time frame.

The management office said police already got their faces captured from camera
and obtained their fingerprints. Do you guys think it really help my situation?

I doubt that I will get paid, even though the criminals are caught.

And I do not have much time to let my car window opened so I'm installing new
window by tomorrow in my own cost.

Well there we go. I rest my case

If the matter goes to court, you can request restitution from the crooks. Failing that, there is a victim idemnity fund that you can apply to, however given the trivial nature of the offence, and the fact that you can afford to repair the car, I'd forfeit that option IMO.

Glad the low lives were caught!

it may not help you regarding your cost, but at least it may prevent happening again to other individuals.
