Lock-able gas cap??
So....i see more and more articles about how people are loosing their gas out of cars and how since the gas prices keep going up, this problem will only get worse. So my question to you is..... Should i take a chance or break down and buy a lock-able gas cap?
Has anyone done this already? If so, which gas cap did you get? |

You realize most modern cars have a screen in the filler tube to prevent someone from siphoning gas out right?
Unless they jack your actual gas tank.....I'm not concerned at all. Also our gas doors do lock..... |

When you lock your car... so does the little door for the gas.

Unless you leave your car unlocked while parked, then I highly doubt someone is going to walk up to your car and try siphoning your gas since the lid locks with the car doors. These cars are also impossible to siphon since there's obstacles in the way from the fill port down to the tank. This isnt the 1970s where cars have a straight pipe right into the gas tank.

Technically, all you need to do is stab the gas tank located on the passenger side, near the rear wheel well.
Then put a tray under. But if you're caught, it's vandalism along with stealing. |

Why would you spend $20 on a lockable gascap to stop the slight chance that someone might try to steal $20 in gas from your car. If it happens enough to make the gas cap worth while, then you have bigger problems. They will also do several hundred in damage to your car prying off or open the gas cap and breaking the screen in the filler neck to do it, so at the end of the day, the little bit of gas they get is the least of all your worries!

I thought about this situation the other day while standing at the gas station paying $4 per gallon to fill my tank. I came to the following conclusion which gave me a sick sense of comfort.... I suspect if/when someone steals my gas that while in hurry to syphon and drain my tank without getting caught, they will probably overlook the fact that my car is a diesel. My thoughts quickly jump to wishing I could be a fly on the wall as the chucklehead is filling their tank with my diesel, then he proceeds to attempt to drive off on his merry way.
No locking gas cap for me! |
