M3 Test Drive...I want one, I want one!!

or do I?

Had a good test drive today in an E92 M3 with M DCT.

1st impression.... That noise, OMG it's gorgeous I could listen to that all day

The DSG gearbox is very good, so much better than an auto or the old SMG box.
Using it in manual mode (flappy paddle things or using the gear shift) it's almost converted me to not having a manual gearbox again! (But would need to try a proper M3 manual).

Everything about the car is good.

Handling, seems so much better with proper rubber.

That noise!

Easy to drive if you're not in the mood for a blast.

That V8 noise!!

BUT, given that a new M3 E90 is £49000ish plus options and also the added cost of servicing etc. is it worth the extra cost over say my 335i? Yes, it's a brilliant car but for normal everyday use, the performance is not in my opinion that much greater, (and the fact that they only offered me £21999 for mine!!!).

Maybe in a few years time they will be a good 2 year old example that changes my opinion, but at the moment I'm very happy with my 335i!

Maybe I'll just add an Evolve ECU to mine and get the LSD from Birds.

Oh, one last thing.. did I mention the noise it made - $%£! ME!!

I think you've hit the nail on the head. The M3 is an awesome piece of kit, that makes a truly fantastic noise.

But, if you are using the car on a daily basis you have to question if it is that much better than something like a 335, or even the 330. I personally don't think so as you just acn't use that extra performance every day, but yuo have to pay for it all the time.

If only we could all be like Booforty and only need the car for the weekend. Then there'd be a lot more M3s around here.

Nice write up and interesting points about the DCT.

Get the impression you liked the 'noise' then. Think I must have been deafened by driving mine. Agree the noise certainly gets better the higher the revs climb but I would prefer a more 'throaty' sound. Believe Paul has achieved this with his.

Good car overall though and the M3 imo feels a car that would be easy to live with day to day.

I'm glad I'm not going mad in my old age and that someone else agrees with me!

It is a truly awesome car and Booforty you are a lucky $%£$% to be able to own one, but i also think that us 335i drivers are lucky in that i think we have the performance bargain of the decade!

Also forgot to mention the downshift blips - truly gorgeous!!

BTW. How do you think a BIRDS LSD & an Evolve chip would effect warranty issues?

Yeah, sounds like a diesel.

Spot the diesel that had to slow down for him to catch up though.

The new M3 does sound good, but one that's with fitted an ACS backbox sounds even better.

You know it makes sense Paul.
