Best Point and Shoot Camera?

I'm looking to buy a new one after my previous one (Sony DSC-T9) was thrown into the pool by a drunk psycho bitch and my friend is looking to sell his unopened Sony DSC-TX9 to me for $150 because he was given an SLR as a gift. I'm strongly considering taking it off his hands because it's basically a much better version of my previous camera (which I loved) but I wanted to see if there's something better out there for the price that you guys here would recommend.

The TX9:

Canon Powershot G12 or Powershot S95. It depends how many manual functions you want to have, and how big of a camera you want. Both shoot in RAW.

A point-and-shoot has its distinctive advantages over a dSLR (smaller form factor is one).

My Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 actually takes sharper images at full zoom (500mm) than my Canon T1i with the ES-F 55-250mm. It can also be set up to take completely silent pics, which is good at a wedding or in other circumstances where you don't want a lot of camera noise. It shoots very nice vids and will capture RAW+JPEG. Mine is an older model. I believe the latest is the DMC-FZ100. You can pick up a new DMC-FZ40 for under $300.

My FZ18 fits very nicely in the top portion of my new Slingshot 102AW bag. It will not slip into your pocket, though. It's a little too big for that.

The G12 is what I was looking at but at $150, I don't think I can find a better deal than this one.

My gf bought a Panasonic DMC-ZS7 a few months ago, and it's pretty slick. The pics have been coming out great with its tiny Leica lens. And, I believe she got it for $250 or less.

There are 2 cameras that are very good: Canon S95 and some Panasonic Lumix (forgot the model). Both are comparable so you probably won't go wrong with either one. Anyhow, I brought an S95 to an event last night and my goodness I was very impressed!!! The pictures were sharp, clear, and vivid!!!

I mean I've heard great reviews about the camera but I had no idea how good it was. Videos were very sharp as well. If you have a DSLR and would like a nice camera for the times you don't wanna lug the monster around, the S95 is definitely a great choice (or that panasonic lumix).

you're not going to find anything else worth your while for 150$, so you may as well go with that. If you're looking for the best point and shoot though, you'll have to cough up some more $$$$ though.

any modern P&S these days are going to be half decent as long as you keep the ISO down.

Just don't forget, that to get the best out of a picture, you need to print it. Your computer monitor or T.V. screen only tells a small portion of the story.

Oh I didn't read that you only want to spend $150 on a camera. For that range there are a few good options out there: Canon 940is is one of them. I know I keep mentioning Canon but that's because that's all I use. I've looked at other cameras and usually end up with Canon so yeah...

Anyhow, I highly recommend saving up for the S95. It went for $300 on newegg on Black Friday and there's rumors it will drop back to that range or maybe even lower in the next month or so. Trust me, if you are looking for a good P&S, you won't regret going with an S95.

Here's a pix taken with the S95 using the miniature effect. It even has a fish-eye effect on it. It's pretty awesome for a P&S camera. This was taken at a mansion/hotel when we were leaving this morning (a very foggy morning for some reason).

Thanks for the responses. The S95 was def at the top of my list but then again, I'm a college student and deals like this one are hard to pass up. I'll really have to think about this one, especially after seeing someone with an S90 at church today. So jealous lol

Seriously, don't think, just save up and buy it. You will not be disappointed. Hell you could even go with an S90. I've never ranted about a camera before so this just goes to show how impressed I was with it.

Was that in-camera processing?

one thing i've learned is that if you have your eye on something, and you settle for something just because it's cheaper, you'll never be happy with it.

Stick your nose to the grind stone, borrow some money off the parents, work an extra shift a week, and get what you really want because you'll get the most out of it, or even use it as much as you hoped.

But if the money is a huge issue, buy the camera for 150$ and don't look back.

oh, and since you're in college, go out one less night a week drinking, you'll be surprised how quickly that eats away at the funds for toys.... Or just volunteer to be DD for a night.

Maybe it's the fog, but that image looks way OOF. The upper part of the building is really soft. I'm sure the camera is fine, but I don't think anyone's going to rush out and buy it based on that sample. Sorry.

It was made to be blurry on purpose. When you put it in the miniature mode the top and bottom are OOF. The middle section (about 1/3 of the screen) is in focus. I was focusing on the chairs (thus making them look like toys) and not the building itself.

Anyhow, you guys don't have to take my word for it but please do yourself a favor and read the reviews on the S95.

.
Good, I'm glad to know that you did that on purpose. I was wondering...

I'm an old fart and sometimes don't understand what's the objective to some things these days. I never would have imagined that would have been a goal; however, I do use bokeh a lot in my wildlife photography, so now I see this as something similar.
