Q: Do I need a full brake build at second brake pad change?
I'm at 146K miles and drive mostly highway miles.
The CBS says I'm almost ready for a second set of front brake pads. Since the first pads were changed under the extended maintenance, I'm a brake job noob. I also do a brake bleed every 2 years. I'm going to ordering new discs without verifying the thickness. RMEuropean has the ATE branded discs, guide bushings and guide pins for really cheap. The pins and bushings are so cheap, it's just makes sense to replace them. The question I have for DIYers, have any of you changed the dust boot and piston seal at this interval? I'm not inclined to disconnecting the brake lines, as I don't want to bleed the brakes myself. What has your experience been? Last edited by r111; 10-31-2012 at 04:33 PM.. |

I'm at 193K. Been through the brakes twice now at 75K and 181K. All I've done is brake flush every two years, pads and rotors. I have not done dust seals or piston seals, just relubed the caliper pins. No issues.

Thanks, F3O. You're a high mileage driver as well, so I suspect my dust boots will be in the same condition.
The brakes feel as good as the day I bought the car, so I guess I don't have cause for concern. Did you use BMW parts or ATE oem parts? |
