Should I wait for the Z4 coupe?
I am planning on buying a e90 330i ZSP 6 sp in fall of '06 when I got back to the US from overseas. I already have a dealer and a deal negotiated. However, I love the Z4 coupe, which should be out by next fall. It reminds me of the old M coupe which, in my mind, is one of the coolest cars ever made. Since I'm not in the market for used a car, my question is this.......if the top of my price range is a lightly optioned 330i ZSP, is the lowest model Z4 going to totally blow my budget? Any idea of what a Z4 would be starting at price-wise? I know it's suppose to compete with the Porsche Cayman which starts in the high 50's. Does that mean it will also be in the same price range? Just seems like if that were the case, it would totally cannibalize M3 and M6 sales, even though those are both 2+2's. Anyway, appreciate any ideas. I think I know what the answer is already, but just wanted to make sure.

pricing should be pretty competetive with the Z4 roadster,
the cayman came in slightly higher than the boxster pricewise, but don't expect a premuim for the hardtop from BMW (anyone remember if there was a premium for couple back in the day??) the Z4 is priced about the same as the 3 series, so if you get similar options you should get a pretty similar sticker price the Z4 is a much more capable sports car, but the steering feel is nicer in the 3. The Z4 is lighter so it'll be faster and more nimble, and to me the design is head and shoulders above the E90. I'll stare at my Z4 for hours, the E90 is nice but I don't just stare at it like the Z4. If you can live with the smaller car only you should do it!!!!! Plus you'll never have to drive your friends around since they won't fit! |

I hear that Z4 Coupe, which will be officially named Z4 CS (Coupe Sport), will be priced slightly higher than a similarly equipped roadster. It will feature more exotic materials and it will only be availalbe with the 3.0L engine. The first M version will sport the S54. BMW will market it differently from the roadster. It will not be the "fixed roof Z4", but a genuine sports coupe.
I will be in the market for a second car myself since I'm not getting an E90 330i. It should be interesting trying to decide between the M Coupe and the Cayman S (IMO ugly, but promises to be a good drive). Last edited by maq; 09-27-2005 at 06:52 PM.. |

If I'm remembering right, the Cayman comes in at 295 HP. Anyhow, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an M Coupe if it's available two years from now. That's a big part of the reason I decided to take a 2 year lease on the E90 I just ordered. |

I love the Z4 and I was looking at a used one--red...so nice! I decided against it though because I realized it just wasn't practical for me. Maybe some day when I have two cars.

the cayman is actually FASTER around the "ring" than the standard carrera, don't get all hung up on hp numbers. The cayman is going to be a bad ass ride. |

Yea, don't despise the Cayman S. I've driven both the MKI and MKII Boxster S. Even without a fixed roof that little car is easily one of the most fun cars I've eve driven. I can't imagine what extra power and rigidity will do to that flawless chassis.
A lot of people forget the fact that the 987 is mid-engined, which makes a huge difference from the butt heavy 911s. I can't say that I don't like the 911s, but their handling could be very weird at times (and that's also why so many people love them). The 987 on the other hand, is precise ALL the time. It is not a poor man's 911, it's a poor man's CGT. That said, I'd really like to see BMW push the S54 further back under the M Coupe's hood. I think it's possible to put 80-90% of the engine behind the front axle inside that long nose, leaving only the cooling and air intake stuff up front. That'd really make the Porsche guys sweat. BTW, I hear those awsome wheels on the Z4 Coupe Concept were comfired for production. |

Having said that... are those 4 pistol brake calipers on the Z4 Coupe? I think that might just make the Z4 Coupe the first production series BMW with multi piston brakes which is a good thing. While BMW brakes feel nice, those sigle pot calipers overheat rapidly compared to the Porsche/Brembo brakes. Sure, the first few stops feel wonderful, but the 10th stop sometimes doesn't work... |

I would it looks great and will be rare. even better would be an M coupe and then I may get that instead of an M3. I wish they would just fix those headlights.

I love the Cayman, but Porsche's holding it back. They could and should put the same engine in the Cayman as the 911S, but instead they made sure that their most powerful mid-engine car is less powerful than their 2+2 because the 2+2 goes for $20,000 more.
Since BMW doesn't need to worry about such things, they should be able to create an MZ4 that can blow away the Cayman or 911. |
