extended warranty question

hey thinking about picking up a used 335 sometime soon and i need to extend the warranty on it, i wanted to know if price varies by dealership, as it did on my last car an infiniti, i found a dealership in ohio had a 4year extension for 1200 while i live in nyc and the dealer near me wanted double that. was wondering if this was the case and does it change according to the model car. thanks

Price varies by dealership but only the original owner can purchase BMW's extended warranty.

You might consider purchasing a CPO vehicle, which has the same coverage as BMW's extended warranty.

Only the original owner can purchase a warranty?? Are you sure about that I've never heard that before. I assume dealerships want your money they don't care whose it is. Also are there different kinds of warranty I can purchase like powertrain but not maintanance. I would want whatever I could possibly get them to cover to be taken care of

if you get the extended warranty from a certain dealer, can you go to other dealers for repairs -- or are repairs limited only to the place where you got the extended warranty?

Most of the warranties will be honored by most dealers however they do have the option to demand the money from you rather than wait for the warranty company to pay. I am shopping for an extended warranty for my 09 335i. I have it narrowed down to AAA, Easy Care, or Guardian. I'm looking for as long a time period as I can find, with about 75K miles total. I only put about 6K miles a year on my 335i. If anyone has any first hand experience or can recommend a source, please PM or email me. Thanks.

+1 - JSpira is 100% correct. BMW's extended warranty is called the Original Owner's Protection Plan. It mirrors exactly the BMW CPO warranty.

You might consider purchasing a CPO vehicle, which has the same coverage as BMW's extended warranty.

If you are not the original owner of your '06 E90 then the warranty your dealer sold you was a third party warranty and not a BMW extended warranty.

I have read must of the posts, but the one question that I have is this: When the original owner purchases the extended warranty after the manufacturer's warranty is about to expire, how long is the extended warranty for, what price have people been paying, and does it cover all items (engine, cosmetics etc.). My 2006 E-90 comes off warranty in June 2009, and I am still debating whether it is worth getting the extended warranty. I put about 7,000 miles per year on the car, and it is in excellent condition. Your in-put please.

If you put only 7k miles per year on your car the extended warranty probably isn't really worth it for you.

The BMW extended warranty mirrors exactly the CPO warranty. It is not as comprehensive as the new car warranty and has some significant limitations. That doesn't mean it's not a good warranty, it's just not as broad as the new car warranty. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...P0/DFADt1zG5sS

Great info there... I always assumed that the Extended Warranty covered all the same bits and pieces as the new car warranty -- which includes the full maintenance package. However, that isn't the case right? That is, if I were to purchase the extended warranty through the dealer, they won't cover oil changes, brakes, wipers, etc?

The extended warranty and maintenance package are 2 separate components. Both of which can be purchased for extended time after the original ones expires.

After looking at what's not covered, one of the more expensive items I can see are the xenon headlamps. If those break or burn out, that's going to be a very expensive non-covered expense!
