I’ve also had this happen before. It’s easy to replace the clip by lowering the exhaust and replacing it. The clip is 12 dollars. But there’s people who make metal ones for more. Alternatively, like others a have said, and I personally recommend. Just zip tie it. I zip tied it once and it had a little play still. I zip tied it to the other cable near the clip and it completely got rid of any sound. You’ll need a fairly long(8inch) tie. And it’s hard to get without small hands but better than paying the labor costs and replacing the clip multiple times in my opinion.

Thumbs up

This thread is a blessing! The suggested fix worked like a charm! I had such a difficult time pinpointing the source I was even considering a possible transmission related issue.

Thank you!

Side note, make sure you use metal straps as the plastic tie wraps break loose in couple months.

This is fantastic! Dealer wanted $900 to replace the retaining clips. I had some spare zip ties and 5 minutes to kill. Now I'm back to just the lovely exhaust note. Thank you AJRufhaus and all! I'll nominate this thread for the best of the internet award if that ever comes up. Cheers!

I’ve used four (4) plastic zip ties on my f36 about 2 years ago/driven over 100k miles and they haven’t failed. Surprised my f30 335 I just picked up 2 months ago doesn’t have this noise (yet).

Hi, hope you are well, sorry to bring up a old thread, I was wondering if you figured out the issue? I am having the exact same problem you described on my 428i and would really appreciate it if you could let me know if you solved the issue, I’ll attach a video of what mine sounds like for reference, thank you so much.

I’ve also heard that there is a wire under the back vents that can rattle around, could be that
