N54 Engine Woes
Looking for some seasoned N54 vets opinions here.
Lately on cold starts i've been having misfires and it's been running really rough meaning for the first 30-45 seconds of starting my car the idle will be all over the place from 500-1500rpm, almost stalling at times. If I hold the revs at 1500 however it will not misfire and run normal after the warmup period. I just got it back from the dealership and they told me I needed new injectors. So I ponied up and paid $1500 for 6 new injectors. First cold start this morning and it did the same exact thing, except this time it went into limp mode. I'm beyond pissed knowing I just dropped that much money and it wasn't even the problem. Car is going back on Monday, but does anyone know what it could be? My buddy also says when I get on it black smoke comes out of my pipes, a lot more than normal. And what recourse should I have with the dealer than just PROMISED my issue would be fixed and it clearly was not with this expensive purchase. |

All plugs and coils done within last 5k miles. Walnut blasting last done at 45k, I have 88k now. I know it needs a walnut blast but I don't think it could cause such a severe misfire/limp mode as it never did before around 40k miles before I had it done for the first time. Oil changed 1k miles ago.
My friend thinks my piston rings are fried somehow because of the black smoke..Which I don't know how though, I mean I drive the car hard but I don't beat on it, never track it and it's never been overheated. |

The symptoms mirror a failing injector(s) perfectly..if it's missing like that, there can only be so many causes.
What are the codes it throws? Does it just mis a lot, or does the motor eventually cut out? Does it settle if you give it a minute or two?

Sometimes it throws codes. And when it did it would be misfire cyl 1, 2, 5 and more cylinders then next time it would be misfire cyl 1, 4, 6 and more cylinders. Basically codes were all over the place. It even started through the HPFP code which led me to believe it was the pump but the dealer said it wasnt and refused to replace it.

HPFP LPFP Turbo seals leaking If injectors, spark plugs and coils don't do the trick then those are the next things on your list. |

HPFP is probably bad. I would also have the pressure switch near the HPFP replaced as well. BMW normally doesn't pay for this $100 sensor. But its vital to replace it.
Talk to the service manager. Tell him your concerns. They would give you back some of the money for the injector job. Good Luck, Dackel

I agree about talking with the service manager.. but it definitely sounds like injector problems. Are they all new style injectors? Are they calibrated properly in the DME? One little number being off can cause crazy problems. May just be a faulty new part.. wouldn't be the first time.

I know there's already several good things listed but if your one of the poor guys that has had a really leaky PCV valve the last 43K miles could have really gunked up the intake ports. They probably need done anyway even if it's not causing the issue.

If you throw an HPFP code it's the HPFP. Doesn't matter what the dealer says. When my HPFP was going it did the exact same thing. The progression of a failing HPFP is first long cranks, then misfires (multiple cylinders) when going on if hard, then revs dropped on cold starts and eventually stalling when trying to cold start. Just replace the HPFP and you'll be good to go. I DIY replaced mine and haven't had any issues since.
To be honest, I'm surprised people think it's anything but. It's such a common issue and your car's symptoms mirror HPFP failure exactly.

black = fuel
idle Misfires = mixture If they fixed the injectors, i would guess that the fuel pump is the culprit. I'm not a seasoned N54 vet, but like someone else said, the fuel only has to go through so many places, and you already eliminated one of the most expensive ones.

Even from the get go didn't sound like injectors... It would be unlikely to have the injectors on all cylinders go at once and throw an HPFP code seeing as the HPFP is further upstream on the fuel line.
Get your money back from the dealership.

Well it's still doing the same thing, but it's weird because it's not every morning. And of course it continues to through the HPFP plauability error code. Do i really have a chance and getting any of my $ back from the dealer because it wasn't the injectors?

I had the same intermittent symptoms a little while back, got a new HPFP under warranty and for $130 a new low pressure sensor.
Cleared up my idle and high rpm high load misfires |

Lol so my car has been at dealer this week to fix this previous issue. My SA called me and said he went through some tests and determined I need a new fuel pressure sensor now. Of course when I asked him about covering all or part of the install/part he said he can't really do anything. And he also couldn't really tell me if that would fix my issue, and did tell me that because I have a dp and intercooler there is 100% no way bmw will replace the hpfp under warranty?
Do I have a right to be pretty damn pissed right now? |
