Why do want an M Car??

I find myself sitting here wondering why I want to buy an M car. In every day driving my 335D is fast enough covering all bases. It has a 0-62 time of 4.8, it's serves best when overtaking with a huge amount of torque, it has 4 wheel drive for those long winters where usual rear wheel drive cars can lose their appeal especially when it snows. It has a decent fuel economy and fairly cheap to run compared to an M car. Finally having the ACS springs has sorted a lot of the body roll. So with all that in mind, I drive past a new black M3 on the M5 motorway and think, wow I still want one?? I do not do track days so why I am still yearning for it??

It'll cost the best part of 20K to change. Is it worth 20K more than mine??

Most people wouldn't go and change their home every few months because they have seen one which has an extra window!

I have to listen to my head as well at my heart. If I really want one surely it would be best to wait a year or so for the discounts to kick in. It would also feel better as I would have actually had time to use my current purchase.

Yes of course it's a bit different, but same principle! You know it will improve your life a bit, for a while at least until you get bored of it and the next thing comes out that you lust after!

Pretty much everyone at some level is a bit look at me.

I admit, the idea of getting an M2 (not a 3,4 etc) is a bit of look at me.

However the reason I would go with an M2 over the rest, is that I believe the smaller car will fit in with UK back roads and trips to wales, North Yorkshire and Scotland (oh the fuel lol), better than the larger cars.

Unless you either use it for a track car or drive on continent, M cars have limited exploitation of power over here.

Admittedly, I am also very tempted by the new Mustang (right hand Shelby please) and if they ever produced a right hand drive Viper, I would be in the queue.

You're lusting after it because it's beautiful and will tickle your senses with the ultimate in driving pleasure...

Having come from a C5 RS6 I can understand completely the decision, I had a 2-year affair with it and loved it. It was even practical - more so that my 335d is some ways - and if I'm honest, I flirted with the idea of getting a new one so I could have the warranty, newer tech, and the 550hp super-estate. I don't regret it at all as I always wanted one - as Nick says, you only live once.

But 99% of the time I only miss the V8 noise and the 'proper' leather - can't ask for more than that really, bearing in mind I'm comparing it to the Halo-RS model of 10 years ago that had a £66k invoice. The 335d is a have-your-cake-and-eat-it car and whilst I expect to be tempted at times I made my bed with this car for good reason. Remind me of this in a year please.

Why is buying an M3 any different to buying a 335d over a 316d or any car?

Do you need more power or desire it

Because you have listed a bunch of rational criteria under the illusion that your decision is rational.

However, as you've just described, you "feel" like you want one... not because you "think" you need it.

It's an emotional desire in other words.

Why is that emotional desire there is the question...

Possible answers are:

The M3 reflects more what you (subconsciously perhaps) want to show and tell the world about who you are as a person... succesful, stylish, sporty, etc.

That it is more exclusive, expensive, more sophisticated... these are the attributes that make it desirable.

Or it could just be that ever since you were a kid the idea of the "affordable" supercar baiter was the achievable aspiration...

None of us “need” one – but we all “want” one!!

I would like an M3 as my next car. I know it’ll be hardly any quicker day for day to day driving, but if you’re a keen BMW driver then surely owning an M car is one of the things you MUST do before you die? Life is too short.

you're paying for a smile my friend! The 335d has put a few smiles on my face until the M3/M4 came out... It's more about your ego! I would swap my 335d for an M4 for an extra £20k on any given day!

Its not about ego for me

. I want one of the best cars on the road for performance and handling, that’s it. Although I love the styling of the M3, its still a little attention drawing.
My current car is a plain black debadged 335d with black seats – so it doesn’t draw too much attention. 20 years ago – would have been a different story.

But you must have de-badged your 335D so it was more of a sleeper car. That could never happen if you de-badged an M car! lol.
