BMW already does this with the X5: standard, premium, sport activity.

If you want certain packages or options. You are forced to build off the more expensive models.

For example you can't get the Tech Package on the "standard", or you can't get the m-sport package on the "premium"..... etc.

It is just another way to nickel and dime consumers.

You bet we will get these trims. More consumer money in their pockets.

They already do this with the X5. See post above.

BMW should just keep it simple. Although these pre-spec'd models could offer some unique combinations I think BMW is spreading themselves too thin with it.

i think it is a positive step for BMW to dilute the market with different sub-models; gives people more choices and more options.

I actually like the interior look of the new F20 1-series. If the F30 looks similar I'm happy.

The brushed silver door handle looks good.

Yup. They are copying other luxury makes. Just look at all of the LED strips under/above the headlights nowadays.. Lexus, Saab, Audi, BMW. They're losing their brand identity. You hear me Scott???? Don't abandon your trusted customers, because they'll ditch you for some other brand because of abandonment. Make sure your marketing guys know this because they apparently don't as of now.

Marketing is working to improve on a great brand ... nothing stays the same forever. And as someone in marketing/advertising i cant say i blame them. We constantly look for new and improved changes to our clients identity ... consistently advancing on what we believe to be the future.

Give em some time and i think well like what we see looking back
True, nothing stays the same forever but you cannot abandon your core customers which I believe they are doing now. I really do not like the direction this is headed. Not now or 10 years from now...

Nothing new here, Folks. BMW has been doing this in other regions for years.

It s good to have more options: maybe some customers want a more bussiness look, other a more sporty one
The interior of 1 series is great, I'm sure the 3er will be better

I ask because, as SCOTT notes, they have had SE and ES, for example, elsewhere for a long time, and we never had those distinctions in the US. M Sport was also something that was not avaialble in the US until recently, and we still do not have a full individual program. There are other options, features, packages, etc, that continue to not be available in the US as well.

I think you are probably right - we probably will see these trim levels - but the answer is not simply "more consumer money in their pockets". The US has some of the lowest prices in the world and while the reason for this are many, part of it has been due to a limited number of configurations available for cars sold here. The fewer configurations to deal with, the more simple it is to build cars and the less it costs per unit in infrastructure and management, etc.

BMW is try to ensure that no matter what kind of 3er you get... there is one better out there... so you never feel good about the car you've got... sooooo Mercedes.....
It was so simple>>> 328 or 335 or M3 .... THE END!!!
i think the bosses at BMW thought..."wow we are out selling everyone with our current line of cars and what we offer in them...LETS CHANGE EVERYTHING!!!!" morons!!!!

It's kinda helpful for the auto start/stop system. Now you can see if the engine's off due to auto start/stop ("Ready") or because it's completely off ("Off").

Best regards,

I agree with people who say that this is very Benz like. Thats cool and whatever, but I'm not understanding why you need 3 trims? Luxury and sport pretty much covers it....I don't know why there needs to be a "modern". Just interesting. If it aint broke, don't fix it BMW.

That is great idea to offer 3 versions. Then the Sport Line could have a stiffer ride and more taunt steering.
