Black paint around Fogs turning purple
will post pictures if no one has heard of this but seems that the plastic that goes around my fog lights on my Black Sport Line 335i is turning dark purple. Didn't really notice until i installed black kidney grills and now its really standing out. Is this a common problem? Has anyone tried to use warranty to fix?

Sorry I can't help on how to fix this, but I've seen this before on other non-metallic black cars. Painted black parts get a purplish/blue tint to it.

Really glad you mentioned this. I bought a used Jet Black 2013 a couple of months ago and asked about, as mine are definitely purple. Dealer said it was normal. But now I'm googling and looks like it is definitely fade. If you're still under warranty it looks like a few people have gotten those pieces replaced:

I just moved and am about 45 minutes away from a BMW service center so if you could let me know if they cover this for you under warranty would be awesome, I got mine used about 5 months ago and didn't notice until I put on the new grilles and a friend brough it up, now I can't look at the car without seeing this...

Mine turned blue also, SA told me that it was probably painted over. I had to argue with them a little before they realized it was faded. I got mine replaced under warranty about a month ago.

Scheduled an appointment or next week, sent in pictures as I live about 1+45 from the nearest BMW Service Center. SA said from the looks should be an easy warranty claim. I will post results when they come

Curious to see how it goes. I have a black sapphire sport line and noticed the same thing in direct sunlight. I baby this car to the max, I'm obsessive with care and protection of the paint, and I seek out shade all summer long... Surprised to see that still this is happening.

Yea was wondering, figured they didn't do anything to change it but will just turn purple again and by that time warranty will be up. Adding this to my list of stuff to get fixed right before warranty is up.

Just got done at the dealership. Had to order the parts but getting them replaced under warranty next week! One thing to note.. also make sure to check the plastic trim piece in the middle of the rear bumper. That is also slightly faded to purple on mine and they are going to replace that as well.

There is a piece of moulding in the bottom/center of my back bumper that has done this... SA too told me it must have been replaced or painted by previous owner. It didn't bother me enough to push it any further but the "purple-ing" is definitely a thing.

Yea if you are still under warranty it should be covered, I just mentioned to my SA that I had a buddy who had the same problem and he had it fixed no problem, that buddy may have been someone on the forum I never met but hey...

Hi! So following up on this post and hoping someone can help. Looking to buy my first BMW, a 2014 428i which has the exact same issue. The front lip is blue and I was thinking it was part of some package.
How much would this cost to repair? And would you recommend buying a car which has this issue? |

It would seem that those parts are not painted, they're black plastic, and over time UV exposure can turn them purple. You can either replace them or paint them, or try a restoration product like Wipe New Trim Restore.

Using a good trim sealant or coating on the unfinished plastic from the start will keep it from discoloring. Some will also restore the color so you don't have to use a restoration product like Wipe New or Solution Finish.
