Oil cooler added - no more derate!

I'm not new to track events but new to tracking a BMW e90 n52. I was fighting an unknown power derate issue after about 10 minutes into a track session. The car never threw a code just pulled about 25% power.

I started watching temps with my Carly and found oil getting to nearly 300f on track, 245f just driving around in the summer, and could get to almost 260f just pushing it on the street

I switched to a n55 ofh, stett oil cooler adapter, 215f thermostat from innovative, and a Setrab oil cooler front mounted in the lower grill opening. Built all the lines from summit racing and all the mounts from Home Depot Racing Department. The setup looks slick. I think this is superior to using a prefab side mount kit for the turbo cars. No sacrifice to the fresh air vents for the wheel wells. Oil gets hot enough to boil off the water

What a difference!!!! 215f all day on the street. I never got the oil temps to stabilize on track, they keep climbing but MUCH slower than without it. highest I saw on track was 266 at the end of a 30 minute session of flogging. Never pulled power once. I'm not planning on endurance racing the car just hpde so I'm calling this done.

I see this as an absolute necessity for anyone who plans on tracking a n52 although probably overkill for a street car. Any way hopes this helps others possibly fighting the same issue

I had the same issues and this was my solution.

http://www.evolutionracewerks.com/node/132

At least through the summer, I'm running the BMS thermostat bypass valve. My pre oil cooler normal street oil temperature was 250 to 255 degrees. Now my normal street oil temperature is 230 degrees on the street and 220 on the highway. I too saw 300 degree oil temperature on the track and 280 after the oil cooler, but prior to the BMS thermostat bypass valve.

Wow, well done.

Given ST in autocross has given an allowance for larger oil coolers, this might need to be a necessity.

Is actual size larger I'm assuming?

Setrab is a series 9 16 row. Fittings are all 10an. Probably should have went to the next step up on width but not enough height room to easily step to the 25 row

Cooler pic. Gets slammed with air in this location. No affect on radiator performance. Car stayed under 190F coolant temp during 30 min sessions at 80f ambient

Not sure I'd spend the money for autocross. You're most likely not going to get the oil hot enough on a 60 sec course with cool down time between runs. I could run 10 minutes before it would get hot enough to pull power

Future adventure in the car is a TT/DE car.

Also, We have events called ProSolo, which the car is basically up and running for 15-20 minutes (most of the time it's in staging lanes) but could be a possibility where it can be an issue.

You said you can pull oil temp directly from Carly via OBD2? I guess I should start tracking temps.

Yes you can track oil temp with mycarly via obd2. Not the smartest move to try and read coolant, air intake and oil temp off an iPhone with your foot to the floor in 4th at 120mph between corners, but it's all I could come up with to diagnose my issue and see how things improved.

It's unfortunate that they can't log and store.

Which brings me up the question, how are you running 190F coolant temps?

I had to take my car out for a spin yesterday (Trying to get drive cycles to pass emissions) and through Torque I was sitting steady at 220F on the freeway.

It was 80F, but awfully humid (70%+). Intake temps tracked with OAT.

My car does the same thing cruising 200-220., It must be something in the ecm that recognizes you are driving in anger and speeds up the pump. I'd bet you'd see similar results on track where coolant temp drops and holds at 180-190.

This is what I've seen on track, too. Temp rises on cooldown lap and continues back to the paddock although it doesn't get much above 215F, or so.

Your setup looks legit and by your assessment, works just as well

Quick question, why did you opt to use the stett adapter vs the OEM setup?

Since I was starting from scratch, the plate only $60 compared to whatever the oem setup costs

And I wanted a thermostat that opened at a lower temp than stock.

Gotcha.

Did you add in some additional filtration (highlighted in attached pic)?

How much increased capacity did you figure this setup added to your oiling system?

The OEM thermostat I believe is fully open at 235 degrees. On the track, that is keeping you behind the eight ball from a cooling standpoint.

I'll have to post up the map for power reduction vs oil temp. Just because it's interesting and relevant to this discussion.

I believe there is a threshold for an MIL at a certain temp, or at least a warning message on the dash, but it's a really high value.
