need laptop advice

alright I have no clue what I'm talking about when it comes to computers i just say i have a dell when people ask but I'm going on my jr year of college and i need a simple laptop nothing fancy so a 1300 apple is out of the question since I'm paying for this lol. I mostly need it for e-mails and internet and just Microsoft excel

anyway i've been looking at a few laptops one being the hp dv5z its got 2gb, 160gb a 15.4 screen for 578bucks which is a steal, the other one was the dell inspiron 1525 it has the same thing as the hp but 120gb instead of the 160 and its 600bucks. so basically i have no clue which one would be better i know there not the best laptops but they seem good enough for my needs any advice would be helpful

If you're only using it for e-mail, internet and MS Excel, any laptop will do.

I like thinkpads if you got some money to spare or otherwise hp consumer like is suprisingly solid.

hp dv2x00 the ones with 14in LCDs are built like tanks.

any laptop will do for your stated purpose. just do yourself one favor.. if you can... get windows xp, not vista. you may still be able to buy an oem copy of windows xp and install it yourself. vista is highly memory intensive. also make sure you get at least 1 gig of memory, 2 gigs preferred.

15" or bigger are usually chaeper, but also bulkier and heavier. I would highly recommend a 14" (since you probably want portability). Also, whether you go with Dell, HP, Gateway, whatever...most of the business lines have better (stronger) chassis than the consumer line.

Just go to Best Buy, or any other electronics store and feel the difference for yourself. I bought a 15" Dell many moons ago, but after a while, I wish I had something lighter and more portable.

okay yes i read your post

macbook pro refurbished is ~1300 iirc. if not, i think they're around 1500 and that's a bargain for that system

if you don't mind not being able to game very well though and you still like macs, macbooks of today are pretty sweet! you get a free ipod touch with it if you're a student now too

now, with 1300 to spend, i suggest looking into the ASUS laptops. i don't know any in specific but i've gone through all my friends' and the ASUS ones are on another level, quality wise
