Finish the job, wait a few minutes for things to shrink back to normal size, and go about your day. I dont see the need to involve the police.

I have seen something similar in the ER (not a bench). Once the swelling gets beyond a certain point it will never just "shrink back to normal" because the metal hole is constricting it so much that the blood flow can't go back.
