What aren't people taking action on the Somali pirates?

These Somali pirates are hijacking huge ships (oil tankers, cargo ships full of weapons and military equipment, attempted hijacking of cruise ships) and it seems like no one really cares? It seems like the world believes it's okay to give out hundreds of millions of dollars of ransom for these criminals who are probably linked to Al-Qaeda. DUMB!!!

I vote we firebomb the oil tanker they took.

Okay... not really. In all reality I think the world is busy dealing with their own major problems outside of terrorism. Lets face it... the medias attention has mostly turned to focus on the economy... who knows maybe they could be doing something about it and we just arent aware yet.

@ OP
how are they al-quaeda??

newer ships require very little crew... I'd say maybe 10-16 people?
not hard to take over a vessel with that few crew members
too many ships come and go, the seas are too vast to put up a patrol
putting armed gun-men as security on every ship would drive cost through the roof + the difficulty of doing so.

it is easier to just get paid by insurance for such things.
the cargo is insured by the shipper, and the vessel is insured by the ship owner.

I am still really confused how these halfwit guys with canoes and outboard motors are taking over massive ships. Last time I noticed aren't the sides of ships nice an smooth? How the hell are these guys getting up on deck? I say wait till they come up beside you, and drop a grenade off the side at them. Problem solved.

Case in point:

Unless you just sit there and let them climb up a rope I don't see any other way for them to scale the side of a ship like that.

Yet somehow they managed to take this puppy over.....

+1
Or as they get closer, just unload on them with your own AK.

Just hit them with the boat. As soon as they pull along side just turn into them. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know which boat would win that duel. They may shoot at the hull, big deal. It won't sink the boat. The rockets are only there to scare, if they ever fired a rocket at the ship they just lost their chance of ever taking the ship.

I understand it's not agile. It's not like the tanker is trying to maneuver in close surroundings. Their out at open see. If they take a 1/4mile turn that doesn't hurt anyone and they have plenty of space to do it.

Can the tanker turn left or right? Yes. Is it made of steal and heavy as fuck? Yes. Are the Pirate boats small and breakable? YES!

When there trying to tie to the side of the boat 5 feet away jack the wheel left of right and run into the fucker. It will very likely cause damage and make them move away.

The ships are long and cant turn on a dime. The pirates have multiple boats. All it takes is for one pirate with a gun to scale the side of the ship and its over. Crews on those ships are small. So if 3 or 4 pirate ships each attacks a different side, most likely one of the pirates will get aboard.

They need a dedicated guard on those ships. One or two guys with guns, not grenades, to shoot at the pirates. I think that would solve alot of the problems.

That may be likely but if the boat keeps moving and doesn't run a straight and steady coarse it would be harder for the pirates to tie up and scale a 20ft. or higher steel wall. Plus when the guy is climbing a rope he can't really fire his gun, now can he? Hide by the rope and when he gets near the top drop do a haymaker with a hammer to his head. You don't have to be a military guy to hit someone defenseless on a rope with a hammer.

Plus the shipping companies need to get on board with paying to have a single ex-military guy on board with plenty of guns. Even if you paid the guy $5k to be on board for a 5 day trip, he could make about $20k a month. The companies also prolly only have 5 boats tops going through that region at a time. So that would be $20k/wk or $100k/mo.they would pay if running through that region that constantly. That or have a boat taken and pay a multi-million dollar ransom. I'd pay the military guy just for the security. They prolly even get a drop on their insurance for secured travel

That too. But wouldn't it be way more fun to hammer the guy in the head right when he climbs all the way up and just about to board the ship

Reasons those giant ships are relatively vulnerable to those pirates.

Those ships are VERY slow and cannot steer or accelerate safely in a fashion where you would even notice.

Those ships are huge and vision sight is very limited, especially to scout those tiny motor boats.

Once pirates are near the ship, you won't even notice they are next you and they are comming onboard. You won't hear a thing.

Its obvious the ships cant ram the smaller boats. Like I and others have mentioned a single guard or two with automatic weapons would be a big deterrent. If those pirates knew that a guy with a rifle is sitting on the side of the boat, being paid to shoot them, then the pirates might think twice about getting too close.

eff it. Just hook some big ass canons to the sides of the ships and settle it old school.
