BMW 3GT Tailgate no longer opens or closes automatically

Hi All,

My tailgate started to only open sometimes for a few months, now it has completely stopped and I have to manually pull it open and push it shut. The key does still unlock it and you can hear the lock click, but the motorisation no longer works. I am trying to find out what may be the cause, has anyone else experienced this issue?

The parts are shown in this link:

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=41_2248

I am thinking it must be the motor, number 11 in the list, but not sure how the system works as a whole. Is that the only motorised part or are the structs also somehow powered does anyone know?

Oh and one other bit of info - I have had a water leak that appears to be coming from the spoiler. That has fried the AMP (£1260! for replacement). Hoping to fix the water leak first and then the tailgate opening and finally the amp.

Any help advice would be great

The first step in any diagnosis is to pull error codes. A leak in the area of the spoiler is usually caused by clogged drain tubes. You can see them underneath the spoiler.

Since you can hear the lock click and then you can manually lift the tailgate and then shut it, I'd suspect that the spindle drives are done.

It is Item #17 here:

As @Billfitz said, you should check the drain channels in the tail gate. Force the spoiler to be lifted using the button on the drivers door, and then you will see the drains - they are in the spots where the spoiler hinges are.

Good luck.
