which do you prefer and why?

I love doing both. Since I began chairing the Boston Chapter events I had a lot more fun at autocross though. My friend Christo and I have been chairing the events for 3 seasons/years now.. 7 regular season events, 2 schools, and a Test & Tune event every year is a lot to organize for about 100 drivers per event.

It definitely takes away from the fun, but it's rewarding itself.

As far as doing DEs, they are a totally different world, but are incredible fun too. I like to get in as many as I can each year, but with the autox events taking a lot of time, it's hard for me to do too many events. Plus, they are quite a bit more expensive to run in.. less so, if you live near a track and don't have to also pay for hotels.

Track because you can actually make it through all 6 gears , heel toe, pick a good racing line, go alot faster.

I tink i will go with track because you can open up the taps more, but it is worth noting i have no experince with either

Autox is much more of a finesse and precise sport than track events for your average person (once you get decent at it). You'll use the brakes, gas, and steer far more than on the track, pound for pound, and really learn the limits of your car at more real world speeds.

Track days. You'll get more seat time in one track day weekend than a whole season of autocrossing. Plus, you'll get to go faster than 45mph.

45mph??!! I'm glad I don't autocross by you guys. I frequently have to figure out if it's worth the time to shift to third, as I'm bouncing off the rev limiter at 70mph. I've been at events where you are going close to 80 for very brief sections (SVT club usually sets the courses up for Vipers to make it through).

You are true about the seat time though. We're the exception to the rule by giving eight 90second runs per event. Most have 4-6 ~50 second runs.

I have never done either, but someday I would like to try both with my 135i. I may be sad on that day that I went with the slush shifter, but I will commute with it every day so...

Been doing both for many years, but prefer track events just because of the time spent behind the wheel. I usually have to drive from 2 to 6 hours for an autocross or track event, so maximizing the driving time in the event means a lot also. Seems like I can only get around to one or two autocrosses a year as time runs short these days. I do spend beteen 20 and 30 days a year on the track though.

Autocross will definitely help you learn the car control techniques at a much safer speed. After you have spent a lot of time on the track and get used to the higher speeds, things actually feel slower on the autocross course although you are going much faster. I do miss the old days (back in the late 80"s) when we had autocrosses at the Lincoln Nebraska Airpark and I could hit over 100 MPH in my CRX. Then they had to kick us out for development space on the safer barrier.
