For the last two years the Sauber F1 Team mechanics have been using their downtime to slice a Formula One racing car lengthwise down the middle with the precision of true craftsmen. Chief Designer Matt Morris quite literally gets underneath the skin of the F1 car, pointing out where and how the individual components are located within the chassis. Everything is packed in pretty tightly.
Thrilling duels, excitement right down to the final lap, and another podium for BMW: the fourth DTM race of the year was a thriller. Martin Tomczyk (DE) of BMW Team RMG crossed the line in Spielberg (AT) in second place. Driving the BMW M Performance Parts M3 DTM, the German finished just a second behind Audi driver Edoardo Mortara (IT), who achieved his first win in the DTM.
This was BMW’s fourth podium finish of the season, while BMW Team RMG made its debut on the podium. Tomczyk’s team-mate Joey Hand (US), at the wheel of the SAMSUNG BMW M3 DTM, finished ninth to score his first DTM points. The recently concluded 2012 One Lap of America competition featured the BMW Performance Driving School Team driving the new BMW M5 entered by BMW North America.
The Monte Carlo Blue 2013 BMW M5 competed in a totally stock configuration (in showroom floor form), with the exception of high performance brake pads and high temperature brake fluid. Powering the M5 was the new twin turbo V8 S63Tu engine offering 560 horses and 500 lb. ft. of torque through a 7-speed M DCT transmission. The 24 Hours Nurburgring race was run last week and we bring you our photo coverage (by moderator Dackelone) from the event, showing the various sights and experiences to be had at the weekend long event, which is also a party and celebration in addition to the actual race.
Many M Flight members had the opportunity to attend the 2012 M Festival at the Nurburgring during the 24hr Race (18-20 May 2012), which celebrated BMW M’s 40th anniversary.
The first day started out for the group at Pentagon Car Sales in Ramstein-Miesenbach, which they set out from for the Nurburgring. Upon arriving at the Ring, all members parked their Ms in the M Parking Garage. The M Shuttle then brought the group to the M Gallery where they were received by Brian Watts (BMW M Worldwide Marketing manager), Sarah Wild (MC) and Claudia Hurtgen (BMW Motorsports race driver). BMW Motorsport continues to enjoy success in the DTM: following his victory at the Lausitzring (DE) a fortnight ago, Bruno Spengler (CA) of BMW Team Schnitzer was once again celebrating on the podium at the end of the race in Brands Hatch (GB). After 97 laps, the 28-year-old crossed the finish line in second place at the wheel of the BMW Bank M3 DTM. Victory in the third race of ten this season went to Mercedes driver Gary Paffett (GB), who took the chequered flag 2.7 seconds ahead of Spengler.
