Are there any M versions of i cars in the pipeline? No, according to Cypselus von Frakenberg, BMW Group head of technology communications. Speaking at the Frankfurt IAA show, Mr. Frankenberg says that not only was there zero input from M engineers in the development of the i8, but there will be no M version in the future. In his words:
“It is separate – M and i,” he begins. “It’s two different sub-brands, but there will be no ‘M’ i-car in the future.
“These [M] are the high performance cars with combustion engines, and on the other side you have the ‘i’ cars with electric drive. They won’t come together.

Augusto Farfus (BR) is back on the top step of the podium: the BMW Team RBM driver produced a flawless race in Oschersleben (DE) to win the eighth race of the DTM season, coming home 6.298 seconds ahead of Mike Rockenfeller (DE, Audi). The 30-year-old laid the foundations for his victory at the start, when he got away cleanly from second on the grid to pass Jamie Green (GB, Audi) and take the lead by the time he reached the first corner. It was the 57th win for BMW Motorsport in the DTM and the 49th for the BMW M3. Farfus celebrated his third victory in the popular touring car series, and his second of the season.

We have updated our photo gallery of the BMW i3 electric car, and added a video showing an on-board lap in the i3 as it goes around the track that’s been erected at the BMW Display at the Frankfurt IAA 2013.
BMW has debuted the BMW X5 eDrive Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the 2013 Frankfurt IAA show.
Although the X5 hybrid is being presented in concept form, prototypes have already been spied in testing, so expect a production model to be made.
Here’s the skinny on the X5 eDrive Concept:
• Four cylinder turbocharged engine (no horsepower figure provided)
• Paired with electric motor (provides 95 horsepowers)
• Up to 70 MPH (120km/h) on electric power alone
• Maximum range of 19 miles (30km) on electric power alone
• 0-60 MPH in 7.0 seconds
• Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp).
• Can be charged from any domestic power socket

Along with the 4 Series and X5, which had their media launch this past week in Seattle and Vancouver, BMW also brought out the 2014 5 535d (with LCI refresh) and the 2014 M5 with competition package for us to check out. Here are some on-location photos of the 535d M Sport and M5 Competition (this M5 does not wear the Competition Package wheels which come with the package).
The 535d is new for the US market for the 2014 model year. A 3.0-liter twinpower turbo diesel outputs 255 horsepower and a peak torque of 413 lb-ft, while getting 38 MPG.

While on the X5 press launch drive, we had an opportunity to see the F15 X5 next to its predecessor – the E70 X5. Pictured here is an xLine X5 sDrive35i in Sparkling Brown, a M50d and a E70 X5 M Sport.

Once it’s fully revealed, we will see an M4 convertible which shares the M4 coupe’s styling (and mechanicals), save for the roofline and trunkline. To give you an idea for how the M4 convertible will look once all the camo comes off, check out our production M4 renders below.
The one clear difference is that the M4 convertible features a different roof — in the form of a non-carbon fiber folding hardtop. It will operate and fold in the same manner we’re used to seeing on the E93 M3 convertible.

The BMW DTM drivers stopped in at BMW Plant Leipzig (DE) on their way to the eighth race of the DTM season in Oschersleben (DE). Bruno Spengler (CA), Dirk Werner (DE), Augusto Farfus (BR), Joey Hand (US), Martin Tomczyk (DE), Andy Priaulx (GB), Marco Wittmann (DE) and Timo Glock (DE) started their visit with an autograph session. Hundreds of BMW employees took the opportunity to meet and have their photo taken with the drivers.
The next highlight was a guided tour of the production facility for the BMW cars of tomorrow, the BMW i3 and the BMW i8. Although the focus of the BMW NA Launch Event we attended was the 4 Series Coupe and new X5, there were also a few M5 and M6 equipped with Competition Package for us to test out. And flog it we did.
The M5/M6 Competition Package both include a Competition Exhaust System.
Keep in mind that the Competition Package Exhaust is not the same system as the titanium M Performance Exhaust which will be coming for the M5 and M6 (see our preview clips). The Competition Exhaust is positioned between the stock exhaust and the M Performance Exhaust.
