It’s officially official! The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics plug-in hybrid sports car production has been announced by BMW! The 2+2-seater will feature the futuristic BMW styling language, geared consistently towards aesthetic appeal and dynamic performance. Wing doors facilitate entry to both rows of seats, while extensive aerodynamic measures reduce the drag coefficient to 0.22. Some weeks ago, we brought you news that the Vision Efficient Dynamics was approved for production. This has now been reconfirmed by another report from Autobild which reports on the progress the VED is making on its way to production. They also mention again that an M version is being evaluated.
The combustion engine drivetrain for the production Vision Efficient Dynamics (gasoline motor version) has been revealed to be from the BMW Concept Active 5, a twinpower turbo straight-six gasoline engine with elecric drive and eight-speed automatic transmission. A fully hybrid version of the VED will follow later.
AMS reports that BMW’s board has decided to green-light the Vision Efficient Dynamics for production at the Leipzig plant. The BMW VED is scheduled to hit the market in 2013 using a regular combustion engine. The drivetrain concept shown at last year’s unveiling of the VED (1.5l Diesel engine + two e-motors) is said to follow later. In other news, this report also mentions that the Leipzig plant is said to produce the new entry level BMW car.
The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept car is currently on display at the BMW of San Francisco dealership. No confirmation yet as to why the VED Concept is at the dealer, but here are plenty of photos of the concept car, with some great close-up details.
New trademarks registered by BMW gives some insight into new model lineups that will eventually be added to BMW’s offerings. The new names include: i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8, i9, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8, E9, M50d, Urbanic, Gran Coupe, Compactive, and Compactive Tourer.
