The just revealed X4 Concept previews the production X4 (F26) SAV which will share the same platform and underpinnings with the X3 (F25) when the X4 hits the market next year. The two will share the same powertrains and have mirroring model lines, as the X6 does with the X5.

As for physical size, the concept X4 shares nearly the same length and wheelbase as the X3, while being wider and lower than the X3. Here’s how the dimensions compare and a look at how the styling differs between the two.

BMW insider Scott26 shares some details on the current product plans and studies being undertaken at BMW for potential new X models – namely potential X2, X4 M, X7, X8 and a new Sport Activity Sedan niche.

X marks the Sport.

The following relates to ideas under discussion and evaluation. Whereas some concepts show promise to production reality. Some show discussions and conception in regards to market and growth projections.

It is not a question of just product planning but a reaction to growth in the segment. The SUV segment whether in city , compact , entry , mid , large or luxury continue to grow and grow.

In case you missed it in the recent statements by the BMW CEO, the BMW X4 SAV is confirmed to be hitting the market in 2014.

Also being confirmed by BMW is an already well-accepted fact – that the upcoming X4 will be built solely at the U.S. Spartanburg plant, which already produces the X3, X5 and X6. The X1 is built in Europe (or in China for the Chinese market).

“I need more capacity in Spartanburg, not only for the upcoming X4, but also for the current X range,” Ian Robertson, BMW’s board member for marketing and sales, recently told Automotive News. The BMW X4 (F26) is being rumored to be debuting at the 2013 Detroit NAIAS in January. That the X4 is coming is no surprise as BMW previously officially announced its intention to build the X4. What wasn’t known however, was the timing of its debut.

The X4 is said to be coming in concept form at the NAIAS, to be followed in 2014 by the production model. The X4 will be built on the same platform as the X3 and is reportedly also the same length as the X3, at 183 inches. They will also share powerplants – a range of 4 and 6 cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

The BMW Group is expanding capacity at its U.S. plant in Spartanburg. “We plan to invest over the next three years nearly USD 900 million in the Spartanburg plant by 2014. This will create 300 new jobs by the end of this year. This will allow us to produce 350,000 units in Spartanburg in the mid term,” says Frank-Peter Arndt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Production, in Spartanburg on Thursday. The BMW Group already invested USD 750 million in the expansion of the plant for production of the new BMW X3 between 2008 and 2010.

Although the BMW X4 has not yet been spotted in any public testing, it’s been confirmed by BMW. AutoBild utilizes some of BMW’s latest styling elements (including the exposed side grilles of the F30 3 series sedan), to produce renders of what they think the upcoming BMW X4 SAV may resemble, as well as the future iterations of the X1 and X5. They even threw in a render of a fantasy X2.

The long rumored BMW X4 SAV is coming! In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer confirmed the plans for BMW’s newest SAV.

The X4 will be positioned above, but based on the X3. It will be 4.65 meters long (183 inches), which is the same length as the X3, and will share the F25 X3′s range of engines. But due to its coupe-like styling, the X4 will have less trunk volume – approximately 500 liters less, or 17.6 cu ft.

Among other technologies, the X4 will feature AWD x-drive, automatic start-stop, head-up display, and voice control.

Is the X-coupe concept from 2001 being revived and being studied for possible production? Yes, according to Scott26. With the Porsche Cajun and Land Rover Evoque small SAVs hitting (or scheduled to hit) the market, BMW is said to be considering an X-coupe type car with which to compete with. The X4 is also on the drawing board and marching towards production. Details inside.
