1st ED July 28th Proposed Itinerary
I have done lots of reading about people's ED trips and suggestions and decided it is time for me to get some feedback on mine. First, the goal of this trip is to drive the car and enjoy it, seeing the sites is 2nd, but still nice to do. I get to travel a lot for work so stopping major cities isn't that big of a deal to me as I will most likely end up there for work at some point.
Sunday - Arrive Munich, BMW Museum, Tour Munich. Monday - pickup car, factory tour, leave Munich by 2pm head south to Neuschwanstein Castle (Photo Op) then off to Bormio via Stevlio Pass Tuesday - Drive Gotthard Pass, Furka Pass, Grimsel Pass, and finally Susten Pass. Stopping at interesting sites along the way and end up in Zurich for the night. According to my calculations this is going to be a long day but the distance isn't to bad. Wednesday - Half day in Zurich then head out for Nürburgring via black forest. Stay at a hotel near the track Thursday - I believe there are a few castles in the area to look at, maybe do ring museum and then do a few laps on the ring between 5-730pm. At this point, can either stay in the hotel another night, or start the journey south towards munich and stay somewhere interesting. Friday - head out and head to munich for drop off. What I am really struggling with is getting some routes for the GPS. I tried ViaMichelin but it only exports the start and end points. Any suggestions on this? Any feedback is welcomed! |

I am totally going to copy your trip! Right now I am picking up the car Friday July 4th and going to stay and see Munich and check out the museums that day.
Saturday, going to Zurich and hitting all the fun passes and stop and see a castle. Sunday, TBD. Maybe Luxemberg or Metz Monday, make my way up to the Nurburgring and do a few laps before heading to Frankfurt Tues, drop car off in Frankfurt and depart Any suggestions for Sunday? I have no familiarity with Europe at all so I have no idea what to see/do.

If your going to Luxembourg, I would suggest to hit the backroads of the Ardennes and Eifel, on the way to the Ring. Best driving you can imagine. I even have somewhere a BMW route you can upload to the navi. It's going from NS to the Ardennes though. It's really worth it.

To OP: I would probably suggest just dropping your car off at Frankfurt rather than driving all the way back down to Munich. |

Main consideration is that you don't have to drive back to munich and enjoy and extra day in a city you haven't visited at the beginning of the ED trip. |

I'm biased -- Munich is one of my favorite cities. So I would run the 400 km from Frankfurt via A9 / A3. Two hours...
I would also try to get a bit further SW into the Italian Alps & Lago Maggiore/di Como. Take a ferry to Bellagio.

No way you are going to make 2 hours unless you constantly ignore speed limits (and probably not even then)... that's an average speed of 200km/h. I'd rather calculate 3 hours for that (and that might not even be enough depending on the day and time as well as traffic).
