The latest airing of Fifth Gear had Jason Plato searching for the best daily driver used sports car buy for under $7,000 (£5,000). He narrowed his choices down to the E85 Z4, Boxster S and RX-8.
This particular Z4 had 80,000 miles but was still in excellent condition, garnering it Plato’s pick as the best daily driver and practical choice with the best interior, most refinement, best build quality and gas consumption.
The segment provides some tips on what to be wary of when shopping preowned E85 Z4s – listen for a rattling noise from the upper valve train assembly, which could mean that the VANOS unit requires replacing (cost is approximately $1500 for such a fix at the dealer). The LCI update brings with it 3 new colors for the Z4 – Mineral Grey metallic, Glacier Silver metallic, and the Valencia Orange metallic color seen here. Valencia Orange paint can only be ordered together with a new package which also debuted with the LCI update – Hyper Orange package (also featured in the photos).

The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle.

On Tuesday, BMW Motorsport and BMW Team RLL presented the car and drivers for the new season at the “Daytona International Speedway”.

BMW and Toyota recently inked a deal to partner on fuel cell, sports car, and lightweight Technology [more on deal here], which should see synergies in engineering and development.
In a report about the Toyota Supra successor, Motor Trend suggests that the agreement will form the backbone to the development of both the new Supra and the next Z4. They speculate that both sports cars will ride on a revised and beefed up version of the Toyota 86 (AKA GT86, FR-S, BRZ) platform.
Should this rumor prove true, and with the Toyota 86 receiving much critical acclaim for its handling and being a true driver’s car, this will hopefully result in a much more dynamic handling successor Z4 than the current E89 Z4.
