BMW’s development boss has revealed the company is unlikely to offer a competitor to the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes CLA.
Speaking to Wards Auto, Dr. Herbert Diess [BMW board member] said the company sees little need for a sedan smaller than the 3-Series in the United States. He went on to say he sees a “high risk of substitution” where customers would buy the smaller car – presumably the 1-Series sedan or 2-Series Gran Coupe – instead of a more expensive model like the 3-Series.
Speaking of small cars, Diess confirmed the company will launch the 2-Series Convertible “toward the end of the year.” He declined to go into specifics but the model will likely share engines with the 2-Series Coupe.
When asked about the status … CONTINUED
Here’s a preview of what you should expect to see from the upcoming BMW model pipeline, covering everything from the F16 X6 to the G11/G12 7 Series.
Automotive News reports that the sale date for the Active Tourer in the U.S. will be early 2015.
The production Active Tourer will look essentially the same as the Active Tourer Concept and will share MINIs engines and FWD “UKL” platform. It will also come in a longer-wheelbase version with a third row of seats.
The Active Tourer is one of several new FWD vehicles which BMW will use to push into new segments. Ian Robertson, BMW AG’s board member for sales and marketing said: “With the Active Tourer, we will get a lot of new customers again. They will come out of the premium segment and from some of the volume players.”
Separately, BIMMERPOST has heard that the Active Tourer will be introduced as the “2 … CONTINUED
The long rumored 2 Series Gran Coupe has yet to be spotted in testing, but we’d be highly surprised if BMW did not go after the CLA and A3 sedan with its own small sports sedan. The company is seemingly entering all niches in which its German competitors have offerings, even niches with much smaller sales potential than the small sedan space, so we expect to see a 2 Series “Gran Coupe” sedan after the Coupe and Convertible 2 Series are released. Artist Theophilus Chin has rendered what he thinks the 2 Series Gran Coupe may resemble, drawing heavily upon the nearly fully uncovered M235i Coupe we showed you four months ago.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe would be a 4 door version of the Coupe … CONTINUED
The first FWD BMW will soon make its appearance in the form of the 1 Series GT and its design is now revealed in this set of patent images. Until now, the 1 Series GT has been previewed in the form of the Concept Active Tourer.
The 1 Series GT, together with the upcoming FWD BMW lineup and MINIs, will all ride on BMW’s UKL front wheel drive platform. How many FWD BMWs should we expect?
According to a report from late last year, up to 12 BMW and Mini cars were already approved for the UKL platform as of last year. These already-approved models will account for 40 percent of the group’s unit sales of cars to be underpinned by the platform, or variations of it, … CONTINUED
The upcoming M235i Coupe will beat the 1M Coupe around the Nurburgring, so says Klaus Froehlich, Senior Vice President Brand and Product Strategies at BMW. In speaking to Autoexpress, he states that:
“I have just signed off the M235i’s M Sport performance kit, which will include a proper limited slip differential – LSD. I’m just working out whether to make this an option on all models.
The M235i is as close a spiritual successor to the 2002ti that we’ve had. My initial benchmark was that it will be faster than the BMW 1M Coupe around the Nurburgring, which it is.
The 4 Series body is stiffer than the 3 Series’, and the 2 Series is the same over the 1 Series. The handling of the 1M was too … CONTINUED
Per BMW insider Scott26, rumor comes of the 2 Series Gran Coupe now being ‘fast tracked’ for a 2015 release:
Yes the 2 Series might be behind the CLA and the A3 Sedan. But as the 6 Series Gran Coupe showed that it can be worth the wait. The 4 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe will not be any different. With the 2 Series Gran Coupe now fast tracked for 2015 , BMW intend to make the gran entrance in this segment, the appearance will not just be what counts. With a greater emphasis on dynamics and typical BMW character.
If you read some of the reviews of the CLA there is some ride and dynamic issues that have been picked up by the media.
BMW are … CONTINUED
The 2 Series coupe and convertible are on their way, having already been spied in testing for months now. So what’s next to come in the 2 Series lineup? Possibly the 2 Series Gran Coupe, which Autobild has taken a crack at rendering. Although no prototypes have yet been spotted, it’s been previously rumored by BMW insider Scott26 to be on the way.
Here are the models that may round out the 2 Series lineup (some more likely than others), per Scott26:
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe – 4 door addition of 2 Series Coupe with slightly lengthened wheelbase and roof line, aimed at BMW’s RWD dominance against Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA. [More Details]
BMW 2 Series Gran Sports Tourer – Hyundai Veloster type A-symmetrical Tourer … CONTINUED
