The G30 5 Series prototype has been spotted out testing and being evaluated against the current F10 5 Series. While the exterior size look similar, the platform underneath will be totally new — based on the modular CLAR platform (Cluster Architecture) which will also underpin the next 3, 5, and 6 Series, as well as the next the X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7.

We can expect the hybrid powerplant to be similar to the 3 Series hybrid plug-in discussed by BMW last week. That means a battery between the trunk and passenger cabin which propels an electric motor contained within the CVT transmission casing. It will cover up to 20 miles on solely electric power.

We’ve seen the next (G30) generation 5 Series touring out on the public roads before, but the prototype has now ratcheted up its testing by taking to the Nurburgring.
At this early stage of testing with heavy camouflage, it’s hard to discern much of the exterior and interior design. But, the front grilles are now semi-visible and the hood cutline appears to have shifted to meet the kidney grilles, just as on the next generation G11 7 Series.

The LCI refresh model for the current F07/F10/F11 5 Series begins production this month, but BMW has already begun testing the next generation 5 Series. We’ve spotted the next gen 5 Series Touring here.
The next 5 Series is said to be shedding some weight, hopefully by way of the carbon fiber technologies which the next generation G11 7 Series will receive.
At this early testing stage, much of the car is still covered in heavy camouflage, but we’ve put together some comparison photos below.

Sure, we’ve already seen the F10 LCI basically revealed (at least for the front end updates), but this is the first look we get at the M Sport LCI model as well as the LCI interior.
The interior shows the new iDrive touch system and new M Sport steering wheel, which resembles the F30 3 Series M Sport steering wheel.
The exterior doesn’t show much changes to the M Sport bumper except perhaps a new foglight housing. This prototype also features a trunk spoiler (as standard?). … CONTINUED
The first uncovered F10 5 Series LCI facelift/update was spotted last week, but it was captured in some less than ideal quality photos. Our new spy photos, taken at an official BMW photoshoot, give us a clear look at the F10 LCI’s front fascia. What’s confirmed once again is that the styling updates are rather minor.

These photos look to be the first photos of the F10 5 Series LCI facelift/update fully revealed.
The styling updates are minor as you can see – a restyled bumper with front air curtains, optional LED adaptive headlights. Mechanically, the F10 LCI will received reworked steering, and the 550i will come with the new and more powerful N63Tu engine.
This model potentially points to the introduction of the separate “Lines” packages for the 5 series, with this one appearing to be the Luxury Line.

We’ve spied the upcoming LCI facelift updated 5 Series again, and the sighting comes on the first Plug-in Hybrid 5 Series we’ve spotted. The LCI update will facelift the entire 5 Series lineup, including the F10 sedan, F11 touring, F07 GT, and the F10 M5, although the styling updates do not look to be too drastic.

The F11 Touring LCI facelift has now been spotted. This particular prototype is equipped with the xenon headlight option which retains the circular angel eyes/corona rings. The LED headlight option (previously spotted on the gray F10 5 Series sedan prototype) will feature the new squared off angel eyes.
We have information which shows production for the F10 LCI as beginning in July 2013, with deliveries starting in August/September of 2013.

We’ve just spied a 5-series GT M-sport for the first time. It appears that the 5-series GT is receiving a sporty upgrade with the usual M-sport upgrades – more aggressive front bumper, sideskirts, and rear bumper. The only thing remaining covered is the front bumper. The M-sport wheels seen on the prototype are from the 7-series M-sport.
The M-sport package will surely come with the usual set of interior enhancements as well.
Beginning in March, frozen black and frozen gray matte paint will be offered on the F10 sedan and F11 touring. This will represent the first time that BMW is officially offering the matte paint options for a non-M car. The two matte paint options will be available with the F10 and F11 M-sport packages and will be available on all models of the F10 and F11. The special paint option will not come cheap however, estimated to be 3300 euros.

Here is the first ever look at the production 2011 ActiveHybrid 5-series (F10) during testing. The upcoming 2011 5-series hybrid will be powered by BMW’s N55 turbo six cylinder motor (which makes 306hp in the 535i), mated to an electric motor making 54 more horsepowers. We are likely not looking at the final body work as there will be unique wheels and bumper styling, but expect it to come in the Bluewater Metallic seen in the photos, a signature color for BMW hybrid vehicles. We bring you the first ever sighting (other than those who have already been given a preview) of an F10 5-series with M-sport package! As usual, the F10 5-series Msport package includes a more aggressive revised front bumper, sideskirts, rear bumper, and some seriously nice looking M-sport wheels! As previously reported, the 2011 5-series M-sport is expected to make its debut in October at the Paris Auto Show.
The F10 Alpina B5 has been undergoing testing near Alpina’s headquarters. The F10 B5 is expected to be based on the F10 550i, with a reworked 4.4L N63 motor (V8 twin turbo). The new B5 features the current signature front bumper lip, sideskirts, wheels, quad exhaust, and raised trunk lid. An impression of the final B5 is below.
